Another beautiful spring day for golf on the Michigan Hickory Tour!
Hickory Golf Day was celebrated in Michigan by a fine round of golf on the University of Michigan’s famous Alister MacKenzie course. After 2+ inches of rain in the previous 3 days, the greens crew at UM performed miracles and got the course ready for the MHY’s Sunday event. Wonderful course conditions and excellent, but devilish MacKenzie greens greeted the players in low 50’s temps and 15 mph winds. Thanks to the crew and staff and especially Andrew Romig who set it all up.
Some excellent scoring took place, there were also some “rain’s kept me from playing for 10 days” rounds. A fine 82 was carded by Hugh Cameron from Sarnia, ONT Canada who frequently joins his Michigan compatriots for hickory golf. Marty Gillespie’s 86 (a Michigan man!) was a very nice, tidy round and John Cova’s 90 was a fine round with a couple of blips. Everyone was doubly challenged by the 0ver-water 18th hole finish to the course…Jim Davis day was made after a chip-out left him with a long iron to the green which he hit to 10 feet – good memories!
A fine meal at Conor O’Neills Pub in downtown Ann Arbor finished this excellent day. Visit this pub when you’re in Ann Arbor!
