Playing Hickory Golf

Month: August 2019

The 2019 Toledo Hickory Open

A fine group of MHT hickory players came out at the beginning of August to play in the recurring Toledo Hickory Open at Ottawa Park, the oldest golf course in Ohio. Early risers played 9 holes of gutty golf to demonstrate how completely immersed in the history of golf and it’s play these hickory golfers are. Breakfast followed then the 18 hole main event, the Toledo Hickory Open. Good scoring on this hot day ensued.

  • Gross: Bill Tucholski – 84, Ed Ronco – 87, Bill Ellington – 87
  • Net: Gary Tripani – 69, Jim Hannen – 70, Xander Dobreff – 71
  • Ladies: Kris Ellington – gross 96, net 68

Dinner at Shorty’s followed, everyone raved about the food and continued to order the cornbread muffins! Thanks to Tim Stroshine and Bill Tucholski for a fine event!

(Trying to photograph groups of golfers, anxious to get out on the course, is like herding cats!) Photos of the event are shown in the gallery section of this website.

The Washington Hickory Championship

Xander Dobreff joined the MHT last year as a new hickory player and has had a whirlwind year of hickory play with excellent tournament results. This season, X decided to add to the Michigan Hickory Tour’s rota by creating a tournament, last-minute, at The Orchards, a beautiful Robert Trent Jones Jr. course in Washington, MI. A small group of hickory golfers tested the course out on a beautiful, hot July day and rated it very highly. We can expect to put this one on the MHT calendar for next year and with more advance notice, have a large field. Congrats X, fine job!

New posts coming: Saginaw CC outing, Washington Hickory Open, Toledo Hickory Open and new photo galleries!
